Phil Sim
Chief Executive Officer
Phil Sim is the Chief Executive Officer and Founder of MediaConnect Australia and MediaConnect Worldwide.
Prior to founding the MediaConnect business, Sim was a high-profile and respected technology journalist. He developed a reputation as a hard-hitting news journalist during his time at Computerworld Australia where he rose from a graduate position to become news editor by the age of 23. Sim was then appointed as editor of another IDG masthead, Network World where he moulded the publication into one of the country's most-respected IT titles, and in the process was recognised as the Most Controversial Journalist at the 1999 IT Writer's Awards.
Sim then went on to become editor-in-chief of Australian Reseller News, helping to grow that publication to a point where it become the most advertised-in publication in Australia, before being promoted to IDG Communication's director of portal strategies in 1999. His work at IDG saw him twice named as a semi-finalist in The Australian Young Achiever Awards for Career Achievement.
An early victim of the dot com crash, Sim was made redundant by IDG in 2000, before embarking on a short stint of freelance journalist. In October, 2000 he co-founded MediaConnect and the ITJourno and MediaConnect portals. In 2001, ITJourno.com.au was recognised by The Australian Business Publisher's Association as the Australian's publishing industry's Best Launch Title and the company has since gone on to recognised as one of the world's most innovating providers of information and services to the media and corporate communications industry.
Australia's most respected authority on tech media, Sim has been quoted by publications like The Australian, The Sydney Morning Herald, The Age and BRW.
Sim's IT blog, squash.wordpress.com, launched in December 2005 and within a matter of months became one of the most read by Web 2.0 blogs in the world, cementing a place in the Wordpress Top 5 blogs and being referenced by publications such as The Financial Times, Infoworld and The Guardian. While the demands of running MediaConnect meant Sim scaled back the block after six months, Sim still blogs less-frequently at squash.wordpress.com. Sim is one of the primary contributors to the Influencing blog on this site, blogging on PR, media and Web 2.0 issues.
